Customer rating is 4 of 5  great for clearing grass   2010-06-08

This is a good tool for small amounts of sod removal. if you are doing a large section rent a powered sod cutter. I would have given this 5 stars however the head of tool was not welded on squarely. Probably does not effect performance, but I am picky about quality. otherwise this tool is well built and should last.

I ordered this to clear my 22' x 22' soon to be vegetable garden of grass. My research revealed the best way to remove grass is with a motorized sod cutter. However, even renting one of those units was out of my budget. Another good alternative, according to some, is a "kick sod lifter". While the "kick" lifters cost much less than gas powered lifters, they still command a price of around $300.00 dollars. The third alternative is the small, hand held-garden tool sod lifter like the Bully Tools product I ordered.

I found several sites on the web where persons praised this type of lifter. However, they were usually talking about Ames Co. 1943500 Sod Lifter. I found very little information on the Bully Tools lifter.

Suffice to say, my purchase of the Bully Tools lifter was a mistake. While it lifted sod, it did so only after I applied maximum effort. First, I outlined (by cutting through the sod with a flat end shovel) a narrow path from which I would attempt to remove the sod. Then, I positioned the lifter over the sod, pushed it into the sod, at an angle, then used by foot and upper body to slide the tool under the roots. It wasn't easy. Moving the blade of the lifter under the sod to lift the grass is extremely difficult. Lifting up the sod is even harder. And that's after cutting a path for the lifter with the flat head shovel. Worse, the lifter removed only a small amount of sod per plunge after the exertion of so much effort.

Ergonomically, the tool failed, as well. Pressing down on the top edge of the blade with my shoe was awkward. It was difficult to get good leverage. I sensed, as well, that repeated and frequent use of this tool would significantly shorten it's lifespan. I can easily envision the steel blade assemble detaching from the handle.

I am not sure if the more expensive Ames lifter would have made a difference. Thankfully, I will not have to find out. I used a pick with a wide, flat blade to lift the sod. While it was hard work, it was much easier than with the Bully. The weight of the pick head and its curvature helped to propel the blade into the sod and just under the roots.
