Friends by the Landmann "ball of fire" fire pit 2010-06-21

Easy and simple to put together. Instructions clear, materials well organized. Two sets of hands helpful at some points. You will need to use screwdriver and vice grips for two screw hole allignments.

You have a large pan for logs. The hinged screen top works very well - giving you full access to add or adjust logs at your desire. You can't easily or safely remove a hot screen that need to be lifted on or off an un-hinged fire pit.

I am meeting many of my neighbors around the fire. People don't come together much any more just to chat and this helps break the ice quite nicely. I am very satisfied with this purchase. Get away from the TV and enjoy that campfire feeling, from your youth, while sitting on your patio or in your backyard.

Unusual and functional 2010-05-10

We bought the ball o fire last fall and it has wintered well and still looks great. It would be nice if it could open up all the way around for roasting 360 degree hot dog roasting, but other than that-- its sturdy, looks nice and sparks are well contained. We have it on a brick patio and when its closed up you don't have to worry that it will burn down the neighborhood!

When I thought about buying a fire pit I liked the idea about this one. However I should have considered that a ball is the most complicated structure to build together. Not so much that I had an issue to put it together but at the end it all doesn't fit right. It is just not a good solid nice looking product.

Great design, poor fabrication 2010-03-22

The bottom half is six separate segments that look like they should connect fairly easily. On my kit, it was VERY difficult to get the last segment to connect because there was poor fabrication of the segments. Even though each segment clearly has a fair amount of "play" built into the predrilled holes, it took quite a bit of manipulation to finally get the last segment to fit in the "slot".
The two top half pieces were easier but only because you create two three-piece segments. Getting the three segments to fit into the metal rim that creates the "sliding" front panel took quite a bit of muscle.
Especially in constructing the bottom half, you need to be very careful not to dent the screen welded into the segment.
While one person can put this together, two people would be handy. I see one reviewer said he put this together in 30 mins. If the pieces fit well, I could see that. It took me two hours.
Overall, I didn't find the unit near as sturdy in the materials as I would have expected. Especially disappointing was the actual firebowl that sits in the bottom half. The metal was much thinner than I would have expected. So make sure you follow their recommendation of putting sand in the firebowl to protect from heat. I also added two firebrick to help support the wood.
That said, it looks pretty cool when finished and lit. It's a real shame the quality of the materials don't match the design.
Luckily, I got mine when the price was only $189. And even at that price, considering the materials/fabrication, it is way over-priced. If I had bought this at a store, I would have taken it back or asked for a price adjustment given the poor fabrication.

Husband said not hard to assemble just took some time with many parts. Holds lots of wood and comes with a cover. Great product at this price point.
